Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It usually starts as gingivitis (mild inflammation of the gums) and can progress to periodontitis (serious gum infection that damages bone and tissue).

A tooth implant (or dental implant) is a surgical component used to replace a missing tooth. It acts as an artificial tooth root, typically made of titanium, that is placed into the jawbone. Once it integrates with the bone, a crown (artificial tooth) is placed on top to restore the tooth's function and appearance.
